Himalaya Padyatra ...a padyatris account.
I have recently spent two days in the hills of Uttrakhand and i had gone there for a special reason . My activist friends from Garwhal region had organised this event. This was a padyatra was organised with a sole purpose of understanding the current problems the hilly state. These kind of Padyatras have been undertaken by activists and civil society memebers in the past. The padyatra commenced on 3rd May 2013 and ended on 18th May 2013. The padyatra commenced on the planned day and Samir Ratauri along with Mr Bhargava Chandola and Mr Aryan Ranjan, Mr Deep Pathak and Mr Chander Shekhar Kargeti along with Uttrakhand Vikas Party President Mr Mujib Nathani were present on its begining day. The padyatris travelled almost 250 Kms and travelled through these terrains on foot and had spend all their time visiting villages, talking to all the stake holders responsible for the development /underdevelopment of the area. The school visits, speaking directly to students, teachers, gram pradhans, and last but not the least the aam aadmi of the state. The picture they drew after this padyatra was really a grim one, the state's development have been jeorpodised by the politicians and the system, the common man has always been a looser and nothing new came out of this analysis. The Farming has become very marginal, the disparity between earning from the farming and investment has made it the last option these days. The love for english language have made people leave govt schools and move out for greener paestures. The youth of the state still remains disconnected from the state , very little option for the youth of the state to find a full time job here. The frustrated and rugged youth who couldnot find a decent source of earning takes to the drinking habit and thats brings to the end of a bright career and family. The only thing which stands out in this divine state is the iron lady who toils hard to meet both the ends meet, her responsiblity is not demarketed properly till date, she has to do all what is required to survive, she is the real man of the family and standing tall among a descending family structure.
May be the above anlysis sound very depressing , but it doenot mean that there is no hope left, there is lot of hope which is still left and we met lot of exceptions in this depressing story, the legendry Madho Singh Bhandari , who still stands tall among these odds, who stood for his people and did not think twice before taking the life of his son,and there are many more who are still working hard and making it work for themselves. I salute all the brave Uttrakhandis , who despite corrupt system are still batteling it out in open. time for all of us to think and stand behind them and support them in their fight for a better Uttrakhand, lets help them by designing a support system which can make Uttrakhand a developed state where each family lives happily.
